Η χρήση του επιθέτου που περιγράφει τις περιπτώσεις όπου τα συναισθήματα και οι προσωπικές πεποιθήσεις έχουν μεγαλύτερη επιρροή από τα γεγονότα αυξήθηκε κατά 2.000% σε σχέση με την προηγούμενη χρονιά.

Έτσι το Λεξικό της Οξφόρδης ονόμασε λέξη της χρονιάς το "post-truth" μετά την εκτενή χρήση του λόγω του Brexit και της νίκης του Ντόναλντ Τραμπ στις αμερικανικές εκλογές.

Η λέξη χρησιμοποιείται εδώ και πάνω από δύο δεκαετίες αλλά η αύξηση χρήσης της συνέπεσε με το δημοψήφισμα για Brexit και τις προεδρικές εκλογές στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες Αμερικής. "Δεν είναι έκπληξη το γεγονός πως η επιλογή μας αντανακλά έναν χρόνο που κυριαρχείται από τον εξαιρετικά φορτισμένο πολιτικά και κοινωνικά λόγο", τόνισε ο Casper Grathwohl, πρόεδρος στο φημισμένο Λεξικό της Οξφόρδης.

"Αρχικά είδαμε να αυξάνεται η χρήση της τον Ιούνιο σχετικά με το δημοψήφισμα για Brexit και μετά τον Ιούλιο όταν ο Ντόναλντ Τραμπ εξασφάλισε την προεδρική υποψηφιότητα με τους Ρεπουμπλικάνους".

Η λέξη επιλέχθηκε από μια λίστα που περιελάμβανε και τις λέξεις "brexiteer" και "hygge" που συνδέεται με την ικανοποίηση στην κουλτούρα των Δανών. Η πρώτη χρήση του "post-truth" με την έννοια που δίνει το Λεξικό της Οξφόρδης ήταν σε δοκίμιο του θεατρικού συγγραφέα Steve Tesich το 1992 σχετικά με το σκάνδαλο Iran-Contra και τον πόλεμο του Κόλπου.
